1. Uploading tabs

We encourage all our members to submit any tabs they have made. The more tabs we have, the better the archive will be! In order to assure that Mysongbook.com continues to be the largest and one of the best tablature sites, we have developed a fairly strict validation policy that all tabs must adhere to.

1.1. What kind of tab can I upload and what are the minimum requirements?

You can submit all kinds of tabs (in Guitar-pro format of course!) but for legal reason all the tabs you submit for copyrighted music must be your original ear transcription and/or arrangement, and musn't include the lyrics.
Your tab should also be of a minimum quality to be accepted:

- Fill in the Score information window (Pressing F5 in Guitar Pro can access the Score Information.) At least song title and the artist name have to be filled out and those have to be the same as the artist name and song name you submitted the tab under (Capitalized first letters...); otherwise the tab will automatically be rejected
- Name the different tracks
- No invalid bar length (use F8 in Guitar Pro to spot them)
- Use markers for the different parts of the tabs (intro, verse, chorus, bridge, solo…).

Generally speaking, the more information you give the more your tab will be appreciate by the other users.

Please refer to Q 2. Validation for more details on the validation rules.

1.2. How do I submit a tab?

If you want to upload a tab you have to go to the page of the artist/band in question. You can find an artist/band name either by clicking the alphabetical list or by doing a search with the Artist search tool in the left frame. Click on the artist link and then click the link "submit a new tab for..." that you will find on top of the tab list. Follow the instructions in the new window.
When writing the song title be sure to capitalize the first letter of each word and write nothing but the song title i.e.

=============================
Wrong --> Till the morning comes (intro) (2)

Right --> Till The Morning Comes
=============================

If the tab is of a special version of the song (Live, Unplugged) write a comment to the validator specifying what version of the song the tab is of. The Validator will then decide what the title should be.

1.3. How do I submit a correction?

If your tab is based on a tab already on the site that you have modified (i.e. corrected wrong parts, addition of a new track - Drums, Bass, Synthesizer, Voice etc.) you should upload the tab as a correction. Press the submit correction link under the tab you have used and follow the instructions.
Please read more information on correction in Q 2.8.

1.4. How do I create a new artist?

If the artist/band isn't already on the site you will have to first submit a request for a new artist. (Please note that almost all major artists are already created, so make sure to search the site before sending your submission.) Press the "Submit Tab" link on the top of the page and follow the instructions. Please make sure to fill in all fields (style, country...). Capitalize the first letter of each word and write NOTHING, but the band name. If the artist is a person and not a band, be sure to use the first name and last name fields properly and the "The" field, i.e.

===================================== ==========
Wrong --> Band Name or Last Name: "The patatos valdes orchestra" Right --> Band Name or Last Name: "Patatos Valdes Orchestra"
Particule or First Name: "The"
===============================================

If the artist you want to create is not a famous mainstream artist/band, please provide in the "comment to validator" field a link to the artist website or any other relevant website proving the artist actually exists.
If your request is accepted you will get a confirmation e-mail including a link to the artist page on MySongBook.com.

If you want to create an artist page for your own composition, you have to select "composition" as the first style (see Q 4. Composition / Competition)

1.5. Can I remove a tab from the validation queue?

When you press "upload" your tab will go to the "waiting for validation" queue. If you wish to remove your tab from this queue before the tab is validated you can do so by pressing “Submit tab”. This will show you a list of all the tabs you have waiting for validation. Next to them will be a delete button which you can use to remove the tab from the list.

2. Validation

2.1. Why a Validation Process?

All tabs go through the validation process before they're uploaded to the site. This is done to ensure that they follow the rules and are of a sufficient quality.

2.2. Who Validates?

Members of the MSB Team, who are selected amongst the members of MSB, do all validations. For more details on the MSB Team see the Q 3. of the General FAQ section.

2.3. Why was my tab rejected?

Generally if your tab is a good quality tab of a song that doesn’t already have numerous versions on the site and you've filled out the score information (F5) there shouldn't be a problem having your tab validated. The reasons for rejection given by the validator will be posted to your e-mail address. The five most ordinary reasons for rejection are:

1) Missing Score Information. This is the single biggest reason for tabs being rejected. Refer to Q 1.1. for more details.

2) Incomplete or exceeded bars.

3) Too short. A tab uploaded to MSB must be a tab of the whole song, not just an intro or a solo. Sometimes a tab containing only the intro or a solo can be accepted if they are interesting enough and if there is not already a tab for this song on MSB. If there is already a tab for this song you should consider making a correction of that existing tab.

4) Too poor quality. A tab uploaded to MSB must be very precise and should be an almost 100% correct transcription of the song.

5) The tab is an uncorrected MIDI import. Refer to Q 2.7.

6) There's already an accurate tab on the site. Refer to Q 2.8.

7) The tab includes lyrics. Refer to Q 1.1.

2.4. My tab was rejected by one validator, but I didn't agree - so I sent it back in. The second time it was accepted, even though I didn't make any changes. Why are some validators harder than others?

Because we are human and we make mistakes. Maybe the first one saw something that the second one missed.

2.5. Hey! My tab was accepted, but now it's no longer here! Where is it?

We are human. And sometimes, we find those mistakes and correct them. When a 'bad' tab somehow slips through the cracks, we will eventually find it, and it will be deleted from the archive.
Another possibility is that someone posted a better and / or complete tab for the same song and yours was erased to make room for it.

2.6. I submitted a tab, and I have noticed several tabs were validated before mine. Why?

To keep the volume of tabs in the queue down, we tend to validate the easiest tabs first. Tabs with no other versions in the archive, corrections that are properly submitted, and submission forms that are filled out correctly and entirely are examples of tabs that are validated quickly.

2.7. Do you accept tabs made with the MIDI Import feature of Guitar-Pro?

Guitar Pro gives the opportunity to import MIDI files. While this is good for getting a structure to base your tab on (i.e. drums, synthesizers, voice etc.) pure MIDI imports are worth nothing in terms of being a tab. Therefore if you want to upload a tab based on a MIDI import all guitar tracks (i.e. guitar and bass) should be corrected 100%. That means you have to polish the midi import to get a tab that can actually be played (remove unwanted rests, correct impossible fingerings...)

2.8. New tab or correction?

There are a lot of tabs on MSB. This means that for many well-known songs there is already a tab. To keep things simple and easy for the users we limit the number of tabs for the same song to a maximum of 2 or 3. Therefore if you decide to make a tab of this song anyway your tab should be of a significantly higher quality before it's accepted as a new tab and we decide to erase an older version.
Writing a note to the validator as to why your tab is better might help your case, but be specific (something like “My tab is the best one – all others suck” is the first step to rejection!)

You can also choose to improve an existing tab by sending a correction. In that case please respect following:

- Be sure to keep the credit to the original tabber in the "Score Information” Window of the file (F5).
- Explain in the comment field of this window what corrections you have made i.e. : add a new track, correction for the solo (bar 42 to 57...)

The more details you give the easier it will be for the validator to review and accept your correction.
Also by putting your corrections in the "Score Information” (F5), it will help people find out what you corrected so they can relearn the tab, and show the original tabber what they did wrong.

2.9. One of my tabs was corrected by someone, and they messed it up. What can I do?

Members correcting their own tabs, in general are automatically accepted, as long as it is an actual correction. Resubmit your original tab as a correction of the correction, it will be accepted. But if you resubmit the corrected tab just to erase the previous correcting tabber’s credit, it will not!

2.10. What are "Stolen" tabs?

Even if the goal of MSB is to share useful resources for learning guitar, it is not very popular to steal another's work.
If you improve another's work, please be sure to submit the result as a correction of the tab.

Validators check all tabs to assure they are not stolen, but sometimes one may slip through. If you feel a tab in the archive was stolen from you, please post a message in the “MSB Team Contact” forum, and the MSB Team will check it out (no need to be rude in your post!).

3. Exercises

3.1. Do you accept Exercises / Scales?

You can upload exercises to MSB. All exercises have to be of a sufficient length (approximately. 25 bars) and are required to have text that explains the exercises. Simply tabbing out scales or picking patterns will not be accepted.

3.2. Where do I upload my Exercises?

If you want to upload an exercise, you have to choose one of the existing folders (they work in the same way as the artist folders).
If you feel that none of the existing exercise folders is convenient for your tab you can request a new folder in the same way as requesting a new artist. Refer to Q 1.4.

4. Composition / Competition

4.1. Can I submit my own compositions?

You can upload your own compositions to the site. These should be 100% original and they should also be of a decent quality before being accepted. To upload your compositions you should create an artist folder either using your own name or your band name. Follow the directions in Q 1.4 and remember to specify “Compositions” as the genre.

4.2. How do the Competitions work?

Composition Competitions are regularly organized on MySongbook.com.
Competitions are a good way for composers to get feedback on their tabs. Judges are rating the competing tabs and MysongBook.com awards tickets for the winners.
The judges are selected by the MSB team and are active member of MSB and/or have proved their talent as a composer in previous competition.

If you want to join a competition please regularly check the main board of the forum where new competitions are announced with detailed rules and guidelines.

4.3. Are my compositions protected here (Copyrights)?

Please be aware that MysongBook.com doesn't protect in any way your compositions regarding copyrights.
So if you think that your composition is a potential hit for next summer, it is your responsibility to protect it before uploading it.
