Before he became the Brazilian Minister Of Culture in 2003, Gilberto Gil was already a political activist through his music, to the point that he was forced to flee to London in the sixties. His artistic approach reflects that free spirited attitude in that he did not stick to the traditional bossa nova he could sing and play so well but opened it to rock and reggae influences, which obviously did more than anyone to spread Brazilian culture worldwide.
