Edward MacDowell
Romanticism in music is usually seen as a purely European movement, spreading in France and Germany during the 19th century. Pianist and composer Edward McDowell is a notable exception. Even though he studied in Paris and lived in Frankfurt, he eventually went back to his native America in 1888, where he became a teacher of music at the Columbia University. His most famous pieces are piano concertos and piano pieces, including Woodland Sketches.
