Fernando Sor
As far as virtuosos go, it is hard to argue with Sor’s colossal influence on the guitar landscape of the nineteenth century. The Spanish guitarist did a lot to make the instrument popular, including writing pieces for it and performing throughout Europe, with a dexterity unheard of prior to his arrival. But he was a musician first and foremost, writing for string quartets, ballets and orchestras as well.
