George Gershwin
Even though he died in the late thirties before reaching forty, Gershwin’s footprint on American music is enormous. The Brooklyn-born composer brought classical and popular music together in his famous pieces An American In Paris, Rhapsody In Blue and the legendary Porgy And Bess. His songs made jazz and blues work with an orchestra in the context of an opera, and pushed all those styles towards a more open and diverse sound.
