Johnny Cash
The absolute American icon. Cash was a bigger than life persona, an amazing baritone singer, a great songwriter and a simple-but-efficient Martin-loving guitarist. The Man in Black first sang rockabilly for Sun Records in the fifties, then country and gospel, and finally recorded a string of breathtaking albums for American Recordings from 1994 to 2002. There, with just his voice, guitar, and some great songs, he showed how achingly beautiful simplicity can be.
