Think what you will of his brash attitude and his impeccable tan, Roth remains the ultimate rock entertainer and a hell of a singer. He left Van Halen in 1985 to pursue a solo career, and it didn’t take him long to get back at his former band by hiring the hottest shredder around as his artistic sidekick, Steve Vai. The two albums they did together, Eat ‘Em And Smile and Skyscraper, are both great examples of California party rock at its best.
