Thomas Wright Waller died in 1943 at the age of 39, and even though his recording career only lasted a dozen years, he found the time to turn jazz on its head. His piano playing was rhythmically strong and defined the stride style, while his composing work lives on through classic songs Honeysuckle Rose (as covered by Thelonious Monk and Willie Nelson), Ain’t Misbehavin’ (a number one hit for Hank Williams Jr.) and Squeeze Me.
