If the music we write is the product of our cultural influences, then a lot can be said of Tchaikovsky’s formula. He grew up in the Russia of the Tsars during the second part of the nineteenth century, and used the driving rhythms of the Russian folklore in his compositions, but he was also taught the Western approach to composition and included new features such as the use of chromaticism. His ballets (Swan Lake, The Nutcracker) are his most widely performed pieces nowadays, but his œuvre is an extremely wide-ranging one.
